I can never get enough information on EQ. I love to know how everybody EQed a certain vocal or drum sound to get that tight punch or shimmering highs so prominent in a mix. When you’ve mastered the EQ spectrum and you know where to go when you need to fix or embellish something, you are definitely ahead of the game. If you can listen to a sound and say to yourself, “Oh that needs a little more 250 Hz,” or “I think a cut at 1.2 would totally do the trick,” then you have something to be proud of. You are hearing something that nobody else around you hears. And that’s something to be proud of. There are sometimes reoccurring themes in audio engineering; certain frequencies pop up more frequently than others. If you can grasp where you will find these following six frequencies then you can definitely make your life easier, and your production faster. Frequency 1 – Thickness/Muddiness Instruments and sounds that are dominant in the lower frequencies can have a tendency to dominate... Relative News

A great guitar collection, learning to play the organ, GarageBand, and “modes are a musician’s best friend”. Our sister site AudioJungle is a royalty-free stock audio site that helps musicians earn money. In this interview series you’ll learn about those musicians, their gear, and their AudioJungle experiences. Today we meet RobGD. Tell us a bit about yourself. Where are you from, what do you do for a living? I’m originally from Carbondale, PA and have moved around the country a little bit. I’ve been in Richmond, VA for the past four and a half years. I have a few bits of school to include a recording arts and sciences degree from Omega Studios in Rockville MD, and an MCSA in MS Windows desktops and servers along with some other odds and ends. I currently take care of a cluster of radio stations here and no I don’t do the websites. I run a little local web startup on the side in which I have a few web sites and stores running on my server so far. Which marketplaces do... Relative News

I’ve spent a great deal of time and words giving out pointers on how to mix the traditional instruments such as guitars, bass and drums. Mixing this up a bit, no pun intended, I’ve decided to give you a few pointers on mixing unusual instruments such as the accordion. With new Americana or roots music on the rise, with artists such as Mumford and Sons, it’s nice to be able to tackle folky instruments when they walk through the doors of your studio. We’ll look at the traditional process of mixing an instrument, but since we’re dealing with an instrument we usually don’t come across, we’ll need to look at it just a little bit differently. I wanted to give this accordion a sort of lonely sound, playing in the distance but not out of reach. Kind of like that Simpsons episode when Lisa first meets “Bleedin’ Gums” Murphy playing saxophone in the distance. To accomplish this we’ll use some echo and reverb to make lonely accordion sound. This is the audio we’ll be working with.... Relative News

Today I will show you how to use Reason’s MClass equalizer as a powerful send effect. Everybody knows how to use an equalizer and how to boost or cut certain frequencies. But very few among them know how to use it as a creative tool. Let’s get started. Step 1: Set Up Reason First of all create a Combinator because we will program it later. Once you have done it create a simple line mixer inside the Combinator. Next right click on the mixer and create a MClass equalizer. It will plug into the mixer automatically and functioning as a send effect. Next is creating any kind of instrument—your taste. I Created a Subtractor. I load up the Autum preset from the Subtractor’s own pad library. Feel free to use another one or spare some time to program a whole new one by on your own. I create an RV7 reverb to give some space and some feeling to the instrument. The next thing is to create a Malström but don’t plug in anywhere yet. And last but not least make a Thor Polysonic synthesiser... Relative News

This is an interview between Sarah Jones and myself, some of which will be used in an upcoming article about Audio Distance Learning in Mix Magazine. You are getting this before going to press. Ok, first of all, tell me about your background (I've been scouring your LinkedIn page-I'm very interested in the evolution of audiocourses.com and Audana, as well as your educational work!), and how you got involved with SAE.My career has been amazing to date I have an entrepreneurial heart and I'm always looking for the next development, looking forward is one of my strengths, I wouldn't say I was a visionary but I am very much an early adopter. In the early 90s, having served in the Royal Navy as a radio/communications aircraft technician (which incidentally gave me the physics background), I began working as a studio engineer and live PA engineer, festivals and what not, and around that time a musician teacher friend of mine asked me if I wanted to teach some sound engineering...
